What Is Cooperative Education?
Cooperative Education allows students to earn secondary school credits while 'test driving' a workplace in a field of their choice.
How Does It Work?
Students can take cooperative education in Grade 11 and 12:
Select co-op during course selection.
Complete an application and submit a resume.
Attend an intake meeting with their co-op teacher to go over their resume and discuss possible work placements.
Before starting their co-op placement, students are in class with their co-op teacher for first three weeks of the semester. They will come back for scheduled classes once a month to share and reflect about their experience.
There is no limit to the number of co-op credits students can take in secondary school; they can try out more than one occupation while still in high school! Plus,up to two Cooperative Education credits can now count towards students' 18 compulsory credits.
Why Take Cooperative Education?
The co-op program allows students to "try out" an occupation, and helps them to make decisions about their post-secondary options. Students have the opportunity to network and develop work habits and crucial skills necessary for a successful transition from secondary school to apprenticeships, post-secondary education, or the workplace.
